Remembrance
Remembrance
Overview
The truth matters. COVID-19 must not be remembered solely as a time when we couldn't find yeast or learned how to video conference. Alongside cancer and heart disease, COVID-19 has become a leading cause of death in the United States. With over a million people dead and upwards of 20 million experiencing long-term health complications, COVID-19 represents nothing short of a mass disabling event and an ongoing health crisis.
Solutions
Inspired by the activism of predecessors in the HIV/AIDS movement, Marked By Covid has dedicated itself to humanizing the pandemic through public art, driving action since its inception. We are committed to memorializing every individual lost to COVID-19, past and future, and ensuring a permanent National Covid Memorial and Covid Memorial Day. Urgent research and funding are needed to develop additional medical countermeasures, enhance vaccine efficacy, and address long-term health complications such as long COVID.
Progress
More than 200 cities and 11 states now observe the first Monday of March as Covid Memorial Day and Congress is considering bipartisan bicameral resolutions to mark the date.
With the Memorial Matrix we are chronicling every act of Covid remembrance to spotlight the urgent need for large-scale public commemoration. And, with support from Snap, Inc. we’ve developed a powerful augmented reality (AR) Covid Memorial Lens, which provides a universal glimpse into a powerful collection of photos and remembrances of those lost to Covid – chronicled by the people who loved them.
