Anti-Poverty

Anti-Poverty

Overview

In the United States, a staggering 16% of children—11.6 million in total—live in poverty. The Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated this crisis, leaving an estimated 350,000 children orphaned. Given the unevenness of Covid, children from low-income and communities of color experienced more than their fair share of loss.

Solutions

Every child deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams. That's why we're dedicated to advocating for policies like Baby Bonds, strengthening the Earned Income Tax Credit, and establishing Guaranteed Income programs. These initiatives aim to support families grappling with the loss of breadwinners and those facing ongoing health challenges such as Long Covid.

Progress

In California, our efforts have led to the passage of groundbreaking legislation establishing HOPE Accounts. This $115 million investment establishes trust accounts to provide baby bonds for children orphaned by Covid and those navigating the foster care system.
